My name is Chris Budd and I started Budd's Skycam by combining my passions of Motocross/ Action Sports and Racing Drones. I raced Motocross most of my life, got my first dirtbike at the age of 4 and started racing professionally at the age of 18. I raced 3 years of Arenacross and raced the local pro events in Northern California for roughly six years before I stepped way from riding/racing.
After stepping away from Motocross, needing to feel the rush of racing again, I replaced motocross with racing drones! I started a Micro Drone Racing League in 2016 at a local hobby shop in Rocklin, CA called Fast Track Hobbies. We ran over75 races in our first 3 years and held the title for having the largest micro drone races in the world in 2018 when we held the "Nor Cal Micro Calling Out the Nation Race" with over $3,000 in cash and prizes that were awarded to pilots from all over the USA. (the drones cost $200 to build so that was huge purse for those drones lol)
In 2018 one of my best friends and long- time riding buddies Tony 'The Shermanator" Sherman and his brother Casey 'Squid" Sherman along with my old man's best friend Dave "DC" Cook all got back into riding moto again. I took out one of my 120 mph racing drones and found out very quickly that a racing drone cannot fly for more than 2-3 minutes which is equal to one lap around a motocross track. I went back to the drawing board and after 6-8 months of testing, motors, batteries, camera, frames, and props, I was able to build a drone that can carry an HD camera at motocross race speeds. From Pros speeds to first-time 50 riders, I am able to fly for 9-12 minutes giving me the ability to film a 5-lap race at all northern California race tracks!
In 2022 we filmed all kinds of events, from SXS/UTV races at E-Street MX to Loretta Lynn Qualifiers at Riverfront MX and everything in between. I have attached a calendar under the "Motocross" & "UTV/SXS/Quad" tabs to know when and where I will be next, as well as a registration form to get signed up to be filmed!
